A minute (min) is a unit of time equal to 60 seconds.

It is one of the most common ways we measure time, with 60 minutes making up one hour. While we use it every day, the minute has a fascinating history and is used for more than just telling time.


Where Did the 60-Second Minute Come From?

The reason a minute has 60 seconds and an hour has 60 minutes dates back to the ancient Babylonians. Around 2000 B.C., they used a sexagesimal (base-60) numbering system, which they inherited from the Sumerians.

This system was efficient because the number 60 can be divided by many other numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30), which made calculating fractions simple.

The word "minute" itself comes from the Latin phrase pars minuta prima, meaning the "first small part" of an hour.


What is an Arcminute? The Minute in Geography

Beyond timekeeping, the minute is also a critical unit for measuring angles in geography and navigation. An "arcminute" (also called a minute of arc) is an angular measurement equal to 1/60th of a degree.

The Minute That Had 61 Seconds

A minute is 60 seconds by definition — except that on 27 occasions since 1972, one has not been.

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is kept in step with the Earth's rotation, and the Earth is not a reliable clock: tidal friction and internal mass shifts make the day drift by milliseconds. When the accumulated gap approaches a second, a leap second is inserted, producing a minute that runs 23:59:58 → 23:59:59 → 23:59:60 → 00:00:00.

For most purposes this is a curiosity. For computing it has been a recurring source of outages, because a great deal of software assumes minutes contain exactly 60 seconds and that time never repeats. Large operators now avoid the discontinuity by smearing the extra second across many hours instead of inserting it.

The practice is ending. In 2022 the General Conference on Weights and Measures resolved to abandon leap seconds by 2035, letting UTC drift from solar time rather than continuing to patch it.


Minutes and the Sexagesimal Inheritance

The minute is a survivor of base-60 arithmetic, inherited from Babylonian mathematics through Greek astronomy.

The naming is more literal than it appears. The hour was first divided into partes minutae primae — "first small parts" — and then each of those into partes minutae secundae, "second small parts". Minute and second are simply the first and second subdivisions, and the same scheme reappears in angle measurement, where a degree divides into arcminutes and arcseconds.

Sixty persists for the same reason 360 does: it divides evenly by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30, so common fractions of an hour — a half, a third, a quarter, a fifth, a sixth — all land on whole minutes.
