So why is the solar day we use about four minutes longer? It's because while the Earth is spinning, it's also orbiting the Sun. After one full rotation (a sidereal day), it has to spin a little bit extra to "catch up" and bring the Sun back to the same point in the sky. That extra rotation time gives us our 24-hour solar day.


Are Earth's Days Actually Getting Longer?

Yes, but don't adjust your watch just yet! The length of a day on Earth is slowly increasing.

This is due to a process called tidal braking, where the Moon's gravitational pull creates a slight drag on our planet's rotation, slowing it down.

This effect is minimal, adding only about 1.7 milliseconds to the length of a day every century. Although you may not notice it, it adds up over geological time. For example, when dinosaurs lived, a day on Earth was approximately 23 hours long.


Why Isn't Every Solar Day Exactly 24 Hours?

Even though our clocks run on a steady 24-hour cycle, the actual length of a solar day (from one noon to the next) varies slightly throughout the year. The 24-hour day is just an average.

Two main factors cause this variation:

  • Earth's elliptical orbit: Our planet's orbit around the Sun is an oval, not a perfect circle. When Earth is closest to the Sun (in January), it moves faster, making the solar day a bit longer.
  • Earth's axial tilt: The 23.5-degree tilt of our planet's axis also affects the length of the solar day.

Believing the number seven held special significance, they structured their calendar in seven-day cycles to honor these celestial bodies.

This system was so practical that it was adopted by neighboring cultures, including the Greeks and Romans, and eventually spread worldwide, becoming the global standard we use today.


Which Day Starts the Week: Sunday or Monday?

While a week is always seven days long, the day it officially begins depends on the time zone in which you are located.

  • Sunday marks the beginning of the week in many nations, such as the United States, Canada, and Japan, due to long-standing religious and cultural traditions.
  • The international standard ISO 8601, which designates Monday as the start of the week, is widely used in business and government—especially in Europe—to ensure consistency in global communication.

The Week Fits Nothing Else

Every other common unit of time is anchored to an astronomical cycle. The day is one rotation, the month approximates a lunar cycle, the year is one orbit. The week is anchored to nothing — and that independence has arithmetic consequences.

  • A year holds 52.1775 weeks, not 52. The remainder is why a given date falls one weekday later each year, and two later after a leap year.
  • No month contains a whole number of weeks. A 31-day month is four weeks plus three days.
  • Because 52 × 7 = 364, a 53-week year occurs periodically — a recurring nuisance in payroll and retail reporting, where an extra trading week distorts year-on-year comparisons.

This is exactly what ISO 8601 week numbering was created to manage. It defines week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday of January, always starts weeks on Monday, and accepts that some years contain 53 weeks. Retail and manufacturing calendars such as 4-4-5 go further, deliberately grouping weeks into unequal "months" so that every reporting period contains a whole number of weeks and the same number of weekends.
