Why Was the Kibibyte Created?

  • To calculate the capacity, your OS divides that 1 trillion bytes by 1,024, not 1,000.
  • The result is that your 1 TB drive is correctly reported by the OS as approximately 931 gibibytes (GiB), which is often displayed simply as "931 GB".

Ultimately, no storage is lost. It's like the difference between miles and kilometers—the distance is the same, you're just using a different unit to measure it.
